How to Type Fast

Learning Touch Typing

Learning to touch type is the best way to learn to type fast.

What even is 'touch typing'?

Touch typing is a typing method that utilizes muscle memory. Each finger on your hands are assigned to certain keys on the keyboard. By doing this, it is really easy to type because:

    a) you can rely on your muscle memory and not have to look at the keyboard

    b) by adding more fingers into the table, you can type at a more efficient and faster rate

The keys you assign your fingers to vary based on the keyboard layout you are using.

How can I learn touch typing?

Many courses are available for free online on the web to help you to learn touch typing. Personally, I used ratatype.com to learn touch typing. However, other websites such as typing.com are available that have courses on how you can learn to touch type.

These websites only have courses for the QWERTY layout (which is the most commonly used keyboard layout).

Keyboard Layouts?

There are many different keyboard layouts such as the QWERTY, DVORAK, JCUKEN keyboard layouts. They have keys placed in different arrangements on the keyboard.

Why?

Back in the days, when the typewriter was first invented, parts of the typewriter were being clogged up due to the fact that the most frequently used keys were in the same area. To fix this, the QWERTY keyboard layout was invented. All the most frequently used keys were scattered throughout the keyboard and the problem was solved.

However, now that we have keyboards, this isn't a problem we face anymore. It was found that the QWERTY layout is actually a very difficult layout to actually type on. Nowadays, all sorts of different layouts have been invented to replace the QWERTY layout. Yet, QWERTY is still the most popular layout.

I learnt touch typing, now what?

After you learn touch typing, it is time to increase the speed at which you can type. To do this, you must practice the muscle memory of your chosen keyboard layout. Initially, when you just learn to touch type, you will type slower than you did when you didn't know touch typing. However, you will pick up pace in under a few hours.

There are many websites designated for typing where you can practice learning speed and accuracy for touch typing.

Additional Tips and Tricks for Touch Typing

  • It is important to remember to not rush the words you are typing to type faster. This will cause you to type many words incorrectly. Focus on your accuracy first, and then your speed.

  • While typing, don't look at the keyboard, look at the screen.

  • Keep your hands at the starting position of the keyboard.

  • Maintain a good posture while typing so you don't strain your back and neck.
